Crankbait Techniques
By
Michael Thompson

There are several techniques that you should use through out the day. Early in the morning you might consider throwing a Mann’s 1- Minus or a Bandit Footloose over shallow rocky flats that have the wind blowing in on it. You will need to cover a lot of water with this technique as it is much like fishing a buzz bait and the bait needs to run perfectly straight.

Then as the sun starts to travel high into the sky change to a square bill crankbait like a Bagley BB2 or a Rebel Wee-R. You can expect these baits will run about 2 to 3 feet deep on 14lb. Vanish line by Berkley. These baits are used in and around boat docks and stumps or lay downs. The key to being successful with a square bill is that it has to bounce or deflect off of something. So to make my baits come in contact the dock corners or braces or to constantly bang down the side of a log, I “tune” the bait to run to one side or the other.

Take a pair of needle nose pliers and bend the line tie to the opposite direction that you want your bait to run, just bend it a little at a time, cast your bait out and retrieve it with the rod tip pointing directly where the bait hit the water. You should see you line cut through the water towards the side. Don’t over tune your bait as this will cause it to “roll” in the water.

A couple of other tips that will help you land more fish:

1.    Use a Fiberglass rod, like Falcons FCG series.

2.    Change all of the factory treble hooks to Mustad Triple Grip.

Till next time practice catch and release and good fishing.
